CORDOVA, ILL (June 13, 2000) -- First in the IHRA Drag Racing Top Fuel Point Standings, Paul Romine and the CARQUEST Auto Parts Top Fuel Dragster team travel to the flats of the Mississippi River and Cordova Dragway Park this week to compete in the IHRA Summer Nationals.
Since the Canadian Nationals, the CARQUEST Auto Parts / CARQUEST Filters / Duragloss / Prolong Super Lubricants team has been traveling the highways, competing at match races in Englishtown, NJ and Norwalk, Ohio.
"We ran Englishtown last Wednesday night against Doug Herbert and recorded a low .80 on our first pass, then had a giant wheelstand in the second round," Romine said. "Then this past Saturday night on a slick track in Norwalk, we had low ET of the event in the first round with a 5.17, then raced Tony Schumacher in the final of the NHRA/IHRA Nitro War. At both events we worked on our IHRA tune-up and collected some valuable data we can use at Cordova."
Traditionally a slick track due to high temperatures, this year's Summer Nationals will have a revised schedule. Top Fuel qualifying will be conducted Thursday and Friday afternoon with the Night of Fire taking place Friday night. Final eliminations will begin Saturday at 4 p.m.
"I think the schedule will be beneficial for everyone as the track surface will be cooler when we run," Romine said. "This will allow for better, closer racing for the fans and the teams. I'm really looking forward to this format at Cordova as it was a huge success at Darlington."
At the IHRA Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals in Darlington, SC, where the IHRA Thursday-Saturday event format debuted, the CARQUEST team won the event. Since then, Romine has turned in two semifinal finishes at the Spring Nationals in Rockingham, NC and the Canadian Nationals in Grand Bend, Ontario. Romine enters the Summer Nationals with a 5 point lead over Bruce Litton and a 36 point lead ahead of Clay Millican. In the past three years at the Summer Nationals, Romine has faired no better than a semifinal finish, but he would like to change that this weekend.
"We should have been in the final in Canada, but we broke a throttle linkage in the semis," Romine said. "If we can continue to run 4.7-second ets, good things will happen at Cordova."
The IHRA Summer Nationals is the fourth race in the million-dollar IHRA Summit Drag Racing Series. The race will be televised on Sunday, August 27 at 10:30 (E.T.) as part of TNN's 12 week IHRA coverage.
