Montecalvo Secures Pole, Drops Tough Match In The First Round
CORDOVA, ILL.-- Sometimes, when you're on top, it makes you a coveted prize to the those trying to knock you from the perch. Such was the case with Pro Stock driver John Montecalvo. After securing the #1 qualifying position, Montecalvo met Jeremy Bevins in the first round of competition at the IHRA Amalie Oil Summer Nationals in Cordova, Ill., and fell victim to a quicker reaction time.
Montecalvo made an impressive first run during the initial qualifying session with a 6.80/202.55, securing the fifth spot. The Center Moriches, NY.,-based driver improved in the second session, with a 6.76/205.26, which was good enough to tie the elapsed time pole position. However, he was relegated to second by virtue of a slower mile per hour.
Montecalvo did not lose faith. He maintained his pace during the third session with yet another 6.76 elapsed time, at 205.57 mph. He remained in the second spot going into the final session. When all of the qualifying-leading Fords improved during the evening session, Montecalvo stepped up to the plate and gave the Chevrolet fans something to cheer about. He stole the pole position with a 6.73/205.63.
In the first round of competition, he faced Jeremy Bevins. When the lights came down, Bevins' .489 reaction time left Montecalvo sitting at the green on a .668 rt. Desperately trying to pace the ground, Montecalvo went through the quarter-mile with a 6.810/204.08, unable to overcome Bevins' 6.885/204.76.
The next event for the Citgo team will be the IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals in Leicester, NY., on July 9-11. Montecalvo, along with the rest of the Pro Stock contingent, will take assault on the New York International Raceway racing surface for the fifth professional race on the IHRA/Snap-On Tools Championship Series. Each contestant will be afforded two qualifying attempts on Friday and another two on Saturday. Final eliminations are slated to begin on Sunday.
