CORDOVA, IL. - The Charlie Hunt Tennessean Team has performed well in the IHRA Summit Drag Racing Series so far in the 2000 season, with at least one of the two team cars making it to the late rounds of Pro Stock competition. In fact, it has been the younger, less experienced Gene Wilson who has taken the team the furthest in eliminations this season. Floyd Cheek finished second in the final points standings for the highly competitive division last season, but has struggled in 2000. However, the team suffered its first double-elimination of the season in the first round of the Amalie Summer Nationals in Cordova, Ill.

Cheek and Wilson qualified back-to-back in the 11th and 12th positions. Cheek's '97 Probe was the quickest a 6.744/206.54. The matching "Bad to the Bone" Pro Stock of Wilson came in just behind his teammate with a 6.763/206.51. Both drivers had confidence going into eliminations that this would be the race they would take to the end.

However, Wilson could not overcome the holeshot start by Chevrolet front-runner Ron Miller, and his 6.712/207.43 run would not put him in the second round.

Cheek, on the ladder against Jon Yoak, took a way-too early red light launch, diminishing his chances for this event.

Both drivers look forward to the July 14-16 running of the IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals in Leicester, NY.
