Bruce Litton Reaches Semi-Finals At IHRA Amalie Oil Summer Nationals
CORDOVA, ILL.-- Bruce Litton knew that his good fortunes wouldn’t last forever, but he had his fingers crossed for a slim chance that it would. Nothing lasts forever. The Indianapolis, In.,-based, trailer distributor had his consecutive streak of IHRA Top Fuel final appearances come to an end at the IHRA Amalie Oil Summer Nationals in Cordova, Ill. at the hands of Jim Bailey during the semi-finals.
“We never want to leave earlier than the end of the race,” Litton said in a post-race interview. “We have been fortunate to finish as well as we have all season long. We were able to gain some points to add to our total and we hope that we have the lead at the end of the season.”
With qualifying limited to two runs on Saturday, Litton and his crew had to labor wisely to make the most of their opportunities. He found a reasonable baseline with a 5.296/254.42 that seeded him in the 5th spot. However, during the second session, he failed to improve with a 5.32/261.52. He finished in the fifth spot in qualifying and by virtue of his seeding was paired with nemesis Don Lampus in the first round.
Litton knew that it would require a tremendous run to top Lampus in the first round. But, the match never materialized as the Texan broke, allowing Litton to single for a first round victory. Bruce’s Moser Engineering/Spectra-One Race Cards entry failed to grab a secure hold on the track and smoked the tires to 7.52/107.58.
His road to the finals reached a tough match in the second round when he was paired opposite Jim Bailey in the Snap-On Tools digger. Bailey outreacted Litton and rode his potent dragster to a 5.11/266.69 victory to a tire-smoking 5.22/250.83 for Litton.
Litton plans to continue his championship conquest at the IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals in Leicester, NY., July 9-11. Litton, along with each Top Fuel contestant, will be afforded two qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest eight entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday. This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of Drag Review.
