Millican Sets Records En Route to First Win of the Season at IHRA

San Antonio, Texas - March 28, 2004 - Three-time IHRA Top Fuel Champion Clay Millican of Team Werner/Lehman Racing had a successful start to his 2004 IHRA season, winning the IHRA Texas Nationals and setting new track records at the San Antonio Raceway in elapsed time and speed.

Millican, the number one qualifier, faced Rick Cooper in the first round of eliminations, and got off the line quickly with a reaction time of 0.053 seconds to Cooper's 0.100. Cooper smoked the tires, while Millican made a very smooth pass and finished with an e.t. of 4.583 seconds and a speed of 320.36 mph, setting new track records in both categories. In the second round, Millican faced Todd Paton, and both drivers had a difficult time making it down the track. Millican smoked the tires, while Paton did the same, losing cylinders along the way. Despite his troubles, Millican came out victorious with an e.t. of 5.799 at 247.93 mph to Paton's 5.977 at 205.51 mph.

Millican went to the line uncontested in the finals, as Bruce Litton had to be transported to the hospital after his Top Fuel dragster hit the wall after his second- round win over Grant Flowers. Litton was conscious after the run, but was transported to a nearby hospital to be checked out. He was unable to make it back for the finals. Millican made the quarter mile pass in 4.596 seconds at 311.49 mph to claim his 31st career IHRA Top Fuel victory.

Millican, a former forklift driver from Drummonds, Tenn., became the winningest IHRA Top Fuel driver in 2003, when he surpassed Don Garlits' 24-year-old mark of 25 wins. He is only one win away from tying Rickie Smith's record as the all-time winningest IHRA driver of any professional class. Smith has 32 combined wins in Pro Stock and Pro Mod.

The next race for Team Werner/Lehman Racing is the IHRA Spring Nationals in Rockingham, N.C., on April 23- 25 at the Rockingham Dragway.
