Chicago - Clay Millican of Team Werner/Lehman Racing, the 2001 and 2002 IHRA Top Fuel Champion, will race at the 2003 IHRA Northern Nationals in Martin, Mich., on August 8-10 at the U.S. 131 Motorsports Park, where he is attempting to become the all-time winningest Top Fuel driver in IHRA history by earning his 26th career victory.
Millican is currently tied for first place on the IHRA Top Fuel Career Wins list with "Big Daddy" Don Garlits. Both drivers have 25 career victories. Millican completed this feat in only three and a half seasons. Garlits got his 25th career victory in 1979, defeating Connie Kalitta at the Winter Nationals in Darlington, S.C., in his eighth IHRA season. Should Millican break the record, the Team Werner/Lehman Racing crew plans to shave Millican's head to commemorate the event.
"Right now, I'm not concerned with the record at all," said Millican. "I am just focusing on our first qualifying run and hope that we can get down the track without any problems."
In his last race, the ACDelco Canadian Nationals in Cayuga, Ontario, Millican defeated Bruce Litton for his fifth Top Fuel victory of the season and his 25th career win. He did it in record fashion, setting a Toronto Motorsports Park speed record of 311.70 mph in the final round. Millican has lost only one IHRA race in 2003. At the Rocky Mountain Nationals in Edmonton, Alberta, on June 29, Litton defeated him on a holeshot.
Millican is the current IHRA Top Fuel points leader with 760. His nearest competitor, Litton, is 198 points behind.
