Milan, Mich. - July 13, 2003 - Clay Millican of Team Werner/Lehman Racing claimed his 24th career Top Fuel victory at the inaugural IHRA Motor City Nationals, despite suffering from migraine headaches throughout the day.
Millican, the two-time defending IHRA Top Fuel Champion, qualified in second place behind Tim Cullinan with a time of 4.860 to Cullinan's 4.856. This marks the first time in 15 races that Millican did not qualified in the first position. The last time he qualified second was at the 2002 IHRA ACDelco Nationals in Richmond, Va.
In the first round, Millican defeated Grant Flowers. Both drivers smoked the tires during the run, but Millican pedaled faster, finishing with an elapsed time of 5.029 at 286.01 mph. Millican faced Ken Zeal in the second round, and both cars smoked the tires before the 100 feet mark. Millican pedaled fast for the victory, with a time of 6.678 at 250.55 mph.
The final round featured Millican against rival Bruce Litton. The two had met in 11 previous IHRA finals, with Millican winning nine. In their last match-up at the Rocky Mountain Nationals in Edmonton, Alberta, Litton got his revenge by snapping Millican's 2003 perfect record of 3-0. This weekend Litton got off to a faster start, but Millican caught up for the win with an elapsed time of 5.003 to Litton's 5.062.
" This was a trying weekend for everybody," said Millican. "Crew Chief Mike Kloeber and the rest of the crew had to work extra hard since it was hard to get traction. I am relieved that we got through the weekend without ruining too many parts and I'm very happy we got the win."
Millican is now one win away from tying Don Garlits' record for career Top Fuel victories. His win in Milan brings his all-time final round winning percentage to 91.4 percent.
Team Werner/Lehman Racing will race next at the IHRA ACDelco Canadian Nationals in Cayuga, Ontario on July 25-27. For more information on Team Werner/Lehman Racing and Clay Millican, visit www.lehmanracing.com. [Millicanheadshot.jpg]
