Chicago - Clay Millican of Team Werner/Lehman Racing, the 2001 and 2002 IHRA Top Fuel Champion, and IHRA's all-time winningest Top Fuel driver, will attempt to win his third straight IHRA North American Nationals Top Fuel title at the New England Dragway in Epping, N.H., on September 5-7.
Millican won the event in 2001 and 2002, and holds the New England Dragway track records for elapsed time and top speed, with 4.614 seconds and 323.58 mph, which he set in 2001.
"I am pretty sure that the fans are going to get a heck of a show on Saturday. Since we don't have a qualifying run on Friday night, it will be no holds barred, and everyone will be trying to get to the finish line no matter what happens," said Millican. "I am really looking forward to racing in Epping again. I think it has one of the coolest ownership groups, and it is awesome how they put the money they make back into the racetrack."
Millican has won six of the eight IHRA events in which he has competed this year. In his last race, the Sunoco World Nationals, he was defeated in the final round of eliminations by Bruce Litton. Litton is the only driver to beat Millican in an IHRA race this season, as he also won at the ACDelco Canadian Nationals in July. At the Northern Nationals in August, Millican became the winningest Top Fuel driver in IHRA history, clinching his 26th career victory in just three and a half seasons and surpassing the 24-year-old record set by "Big Daddy" Don Garlits in 1979.
Millican, who resides in Drummonds, Tenn., has a career final round winning percentage of 86.6%, and has won an impressive 23 of his last 26 races, dating back to 2001. He is the current IHRA Top Fuel points leader with 986. His nearest competitor, Litton, trails him by 204 points.
