Edmonton, Alberta - June 29, 2003 - Clay Millican of Team Werner/Lehman Racing, the 2001 and 2002 IHRA Top Fuel Champion, qualified in first place at the inaugural IHRA Rocky Mountain Nationals with an elapsed time of 4.666 at a speed of 317.01 mph, setting a new track record at the Budweiser Motorsports Park.
Millican, who came into the race undefeated in 2003 IHRA competition, faced John Sipple of the Palmer Chiropractic team in the first round of eliminations. Their race was delayed due to a major oil spill from Todd Paton's car in his first round race against Donald Sosenka. After the track cleanup, Millican handily defeated Sipple with a time of 4.791 to Sipple's 7.428.
In the second round, Millican lost traction at half track, but was able to pull out a win over Sosenka, who had problems of his own. His car lost a blower belt early in the run and he was never able to recover, clocking 8.232 seconds. Meanwhile, Millican pedaled and lost traction a second time, finishing with an elapsed time of 5.268.
Millican faced a familiar foe, Bruce Litton, in the final round. The two met in nine final rounds in 2002, with Millican winning all of them. Litton and the Lucas Oil team finally got their revenge, snapping Millican's three race winning streak. Millican got off to an uncharacteristic late start with a reaction time of 0.137 to Litton's 0.025. Litton led the entire race. [Wernercarnew.jpg]
"Anytime you lose, it's disappointing. As much as we'd love to win them all, sometimes it just isn't possible," said Millican. "We're looking forward to the upcoming race in Milan and hope to get back on track with a win there."
Millican has 23 career IHRA Top Fuel wins, and is currently second on the IHRA all-time Top Fuel wins list. He needs two more wins to tie Don Garlits for first place. He is the current leader in the 2003 IHRA Top Fuel points standings and is on a quest for a third straight IHRA Top Fuel Championship.
Millican and Team Werner/Lehman Racing will race again in two weeks at the IHRA Motor City Nationals in Milan, Michigan on July 11-13. For more information about Millican and Team Werner/Lehman Racing, visit www.lehmanracing.com.
