Charlie Hunt Racing Puts One Car In The Quarter-finals At The Parts Pro North American Nationals

EPPING, NH.-- Charlie Hunt Racing entered this weekend's event with the knowledge of gaining points in a relentless pursuit of new points leader Chris Holbrook was a must. Both Floyd Cheek, and Tom Lee, team drivers for the Universal Brake Products team owned by Charlie Hunt, entered this weekend with a firm hold on this objective. Both have posted wins this season and knew that winning the Parts Pro North American Nationals in Epping, NH. would only aid their cause. The points lead has been a continual volley between Cheek and Holbrook for much of the season.

Cheek got off to a good start in his bid to reclaim the IHRA Pro Stock points lead with a 6.77/204.85, which was good enough for the 9th spot. His teammate Lee was the quicker of the two during the first session with a 6.744/206.57. This was good enough for the fifth spot. Both drivers improved in the final session with Cheek becoming the quicker of the two with a 6.698/206.92. Lee made a minor improvement with a 6.738.

Cheek qualified seventh and had to meet John Konigshofer in the first round. Lee was ninth and had to face Chris Holbrook in the opening stanza. While Lee was the projected hitman for the team to take out Holbrook, he failed in his bid to assist Cheek, who took out Konigshofer.

Cheek entered round two with a number one qualifier in the other lane, that being New Yorker John Montecalvo, also hungry for his first IHRA national event win. Cheek and Montecalvo left virtually together off the starting line, with Montecalvo's Monte Carlo gaining the advantage at the finish line with a stellar 6.696/208.84 victory to Cheek's game 6.755/206.76.

The Universal Brake Parts sponsored team plans to continue their championship conquest at the IHRA CARQUEST Autumn Nationals in Rockingham, NC., during the weekend of September 24-26. The duo of Floyd Cheek, and Tom Lee along with the other pro stock contestants will afforded four qualifying attempts during the course of the event and the quickest sixteen entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday. The event will be televised on ESPN2 with dates TBA in Drag Review.
