Charles Carpenter, owner/driver 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air (Pro Modified class, nitrous)

Charles Carpenter paired up against Shannon Jenkins, the 2002 IHRA Pro Modified Champion in the first round. Jenkins proved too powerful today as he beat Carpenter in both reaction time (0.451 seconds versus Carpenter’s 0.490) and to the end of the quarter-mile.

Carpenter ran 6.472 seconds at 219.76 mph, losing to Jenkins 6.280, 222.33 mph pass.

This was the first time that the current version of Carpenter’s legendary 1955 Chevrolet had qualified for an IHRA event. He has driven this same model vehicle for nearly three decades. Even in defeat, Carpenter can take solace in the consistency of his elapsed times -- all three of his qualifying and elimination passes this weekend were in the 6.4 second range, and varied by no more than 0.045 seconds.

Charles Carpenter Quote: "We actually had the gearing off in the car and ran through the clutch. We changed the gearing in the car (from the qualifying sessions) and it didn’t really work. We tried to compensate for the cloud cover and misjudged it a bit. We are still learning about the how this car handles and we’ll take what we learned today and apply it at the next race."
