Cannon Enjoying The Fruits Of His Labor, Aims For Third Consecutive Win!
CORDOVA, ILL.— He hasn’t began a season like this since 1993, but Scotty Cannon isn’t complaining. The five-time IHRA Pro Modified World Champion hopes to better a personal mark from that season of 14 consecutive round wins when he enters the IHRA Summer Nationals in Cordova, Illinois. To better this mark, he must win the Cordova event and reach the semi-finals a week later at the IHRA Empire Nationals in Leicester, New York. He currently has 8 consecutive round wins.
“We went back to a combination that we knew and were up to date on its technology,” explained Cannon. “This time last year we gave up our edge to try a nitrous engine. We still haven’t returned to our old form, but I am very much pleased in the fact that we have pulled back into what we feel is competitive status.”
Despite a near two month layoff from IHRA national event competition, this Lyman, South Carolina based driver hasn’t allowed any grass to grow under his Cable TV Magazine sponsored entry. Cannon has retained his competitive edge by running numerous match races. He most recently won a Chicago Style format event hosted by Virginia Motorsports Part, located just outside of Richmond. He conjured a 6.4 second barrage in his flamed, ‘53 Studebaker to win over Tommy Mauney.
Cannon along with a barrage of Pro Modified entries will be attempting to qualify for the Summer Nationals on Friday July 3 and Saturday, July 4. They will have 4 attempts to qualify as the sixteen quickest entries. Those sixteen will be a part of final eliminations on Sunday, which begin at noon.
