Roger Bateman of Calgary was the defending champion of the annual Fathers Day Funny Car Classic run this afternoon at Race City.

Ironically, the driver of the Calgary-based 'Showdown' Firebird Funny Car found himself featured as a comeback story after a disastrous engine failure at Las Vegas earlier this year nearly put Bateman and his partner Bob Reynolds on the sidelines permanently.

In the team's first race since rebuilding, Bateman actually finished qualifying in third position, which would have prevented him from racing in the final round reserved for the top two Elapsed Times of the meet.

The local hero caught a break when mechanical failure on the top-qualifying Firebird of Sunburst, MT, racer Hank Coolidge advanced 'Showdown' to the final against Ken Kraus of Great Falls, MT.

In the final round, Bateman won a side-by-side full-throttle race with Kraus beating his American rival by a tenth of a second in front of a record crowd.

Another Canada vs. USA match-up had Lloyd Dyck of Coaldale meeting Brent Jones of Stephensville, MT, for the honours in the International Blown Alcohol Association final with Jones prevailing in the final.
