BUDDS CREEK - Race Recap Lee, Cannon, Smith, and Long Come Up Winners by Larry Sullivan BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Close racing marked the final round of eliminations at the IHRA President's Cup Nationals at Maryland International Raceway as Tom Lee, Scotty Cannon, Von Smith, and John Long emerged victorious in their respective Professional categories. Lee grabbed the trophy in Pro Stock by leading wire-to-wire against Daniel Seamon, Lee's 6.768 second elapsed time at a top speed of 204.58 mph getting his Ford Probe to the finish line less than a car length ahead of Seamon's Probe, clocked at 6.791 and 204.29. Seamon is involved in a multi-driver battle for the 1998 Pro Stock championship. Cannon overcame Wally Stroup's substantial starting line advantage, 0.417 to 0.476 seconds, to win in Pro Modified. Cannon was clocked at 6.500 and 215.48 over Stroupe's 6.633 at 213.30. Cannon has clinched the 1998 Pro Modified championship. Smith overcame Mark Thomas' slight starting line advantage in Alcohol Funny Car, 0.454 to 0.476, in a finish that was so close that the margin of victory was less than a thousandth of a second. Smith's Pontiac Firebird was clocked at 6.021 and 231.87 against Thomas' Dodge Avenger 6.043 at 229.24. Smith has already clinched the 1998 championship. The only one of the four Pro finals that wasn't close came in Super Eliminator, where Long's huge starting line advantage, 0.422 to 0.557, made the race outcome almost academic. Long's 6.217 and 218.19 were easy winners against Terry Munroe's slowing 6.427 and 194.94. In other final round action, Bennie Ulmer Sr. defeated Dave Tripletti in Top Dragster; Pat Donovan came from the fourth-alternate slot to defeat next-to-last qualifier James Austin in Top Sportsman; Byron Worner defeated Pat Gerek in Super Stock; Harold Gault defeated Ray Vierheller III in Stock; Anthony Bertozzi defeated Wayne Allison in Modified; Kevin Roof defeated Britt Cummings in Quick Rod; Jeff Rudisill defeated Jeremy Bevins in Super Rod; and Jerry Jamison defeated Jeff Warren in Hot Rod. The next race on the IHRA schedule is the World Finals in Shreveport, La., October 16-18.
