No Amount Of Adversity Can Stop Powershields Team, Scores Quarter-final Finish At Budds Creek

BUDDS CREEK, MD..-- It didn't matter to Mark McElwee that his car was still sitting in the trailer when the first round of qualifying for the EXPRESS Auto Parts.Com President's Cup Nationals in Budds Creek, Md., was called. The veteran driver of the Powershields Coating-sponsored entry knew that he was going to make an impact on race day. His intuitions didn't fail him. He scored another quarter-final finish to continue to improve an already impressive resume.

Crewchief Buzz McElwee had the motor apart when they got to MIR and was meticulously re-assembling the powerful mount. Both driver and crewchief agreed that it was not in the best interests to rush out and make a run on Friday. They instead chose to wait and run on Saturday.

Never let it said that the McElwee family dragster doesn't believe in the importance of the first impression. Mark stormed to a 6.26/213.23 to secure a place in the field on Sunday. The Saturday evening session afforded them no improvement and as a result, closed qualifying as the fifth quickest. He was scheduled to meet Randy Fraker in the first round.

Fraker was no challenge as McElwee stormed to a 6.251/212.90, on a single pass.

The second round provided a frustrating affair as the team matched up with defending World Champion Dave Price. Price was the quicker of the two, but lifted with obvious engine damage. McElwee stormed by, only to have to lift with problems of his own. Price then sqeaked by for the win.
