BUDDS CREEK MD - SUMMIT FastNews - Bill Furr in Screamin'Eagle Nitro Harley, Troy Critchley in Pro Mod, Jimmy Rector in Big Daddy's BBQ Sauce Funny Car, Tommy Lee in Pro Stock and Neal Parker in Super Eliminator led second round pro qualifying at the ExpressAutoParts.com President's Cup at Maryland International Raceway. Furr, from Orangeburg, SC set a new Budds Creek Nitro Harley record with a 6.612/207.88 to second place Doug Vancil's 6.615/208.84. Local rider Jamie Emery, of Coltons Point, Md., is on 'the bump' in eighth position at 7.123/181.52. In Mopar Performance Pro Modified, Troy Critchley in Johnny Rocca's 'Ironhorse' qualified first for the third event in a row, with the quickest IHRA-legal run in history, 6.227/225.82. Canadian Al Billes was second in his 53' Studebaker at 6.335/209.46. Veteran Pro Modified competitor Wally Stroupe has "hung it up" in Pro Modified and will campaign a Pro Stock car next year. In Big Daddy's BBQ Sauce Funny Car, Jimmy Rector was the only qualifier in the five-second range at 5.876/240.42. Mark Thomas in his Ethanol Avenger was second, 6.010/233.64. Local favorite, Bunny Burkett, of Sterling, Va., qualified third 6.047/231.40 after setting the pace in the first round. In Pro Stock, Tommy Lee in Charlie Hunt's 'Tennessean' Ford Probe ran the fastest 'wickerbill' pass in IHRA Pro Stock history and reset the track ET record with a 6.609/209.75 on his way to the number one qualifying spot. First round leader John Montecalvo was second, 6.640/208.52 in his Billy Wagner-prepared Chevrolet. It is rumored that long-time IHRA Pro Stock competitor, Angelo Alesci, will return to IHRA Pro Stock competition in 2000 with a new Sonny Leonard-powered Chevrolet. Neal Parker qualified number one with the quickest and fastest pass in Super Eliminator history with a 5.967 at 234.04 mph, the first five-second pass in IHRA Super Eliminator history. Laurie Cannister in the Nicorette/Nicoderm CQ dragster backed up and set a new IHRA E.T. World Record at 6.070/221.98 mph on her way to second spot. After two rounds of Sportsman qualifying Billy Farmer in Top Sportsman, Mickey Varner in Super Rod, Kevin Maupin, Hot Rod, Jim Reynolds in Super Stock, Paul Crowe in Stock were first. Karen Haddock in Top Dragster, Tim Sloan in Modified and Christy Bingham in Quick Rod were number one qualifiers after one round. Farmer, of Millersville, Maryland, recorded the quickest nitrous run and the fastest Top Sportsman run ever in his '63 Corvette during the first round of qualifying, 6.513/217.14. Sixty-nine Top Sportsman cars attempted to qualify.
