Herbert leads Autumn Chase Nationals Top Fuel qualifying

BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Doug Herbert led a trio of Top Fuel drivers into the four-second, 300-mile per hour zone at Bristol Dragway during opening round qualifying Friday at the inaugural All Pro Bumper-to- Bumper / Prolong Super Lubricants Autumn Chase Nationals presented by Marcus Cable. The race is the eighth of nine national events on the IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series. Herbert, the event's defending champion, unleashed a 4.888 second, 303.50 mile per hour run in his Snap-on Tools dragster to claim top qualifying honors in Top Fuel. Both ends of the pass were new Bristol Dragway track records. The mile per hour mark could become a new IHRA world record if the Cherryville, N.C. racer can back up the run within the required one percent on any of his remaining passes during the weekend. Herbert holds the current IHRA speed record at 303.43 mph. Bruce Litton was Top Fuel's second fastest with a 4.892, 300.40 effort, and Shirley Muldowney was third at 4.897, 302.96. Kings Mountain, N.C.'s Wally Stroupe led Pro Modified qualifying with a 6.592, 214.35 effort in his 1963 Corvette. Angelo Alesci continued his top qualifying efforts in Pro Stock with a 6.852, 202.58 pass in his 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. In Alcohol Funny Car qualifying, Oak Ridge, Tenn.'s Von Smith was quickest with a 6.039, 237.42 in his 1997 Pontiac Formula. Smith's mile per hour mark was a new Bristol Dragway track record. Qualifying continues Saturday with professional sessions scheduled for 1 and 8 p.m. The evening session, the Double Kwik Markets Night of Fire, will conclude qualifying for the event. Gates open Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
