Romine roars to Autumn Chase Nationals win

BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Paul Romine earned his second Top Fuel victory of the season and increased his Snap-on Tools World Championship points lead by outrunning Jim Bailey in the inaugural All Pro Bumper-to-Bumper / Prolong Super Lubricants Autumn Chase Nationals presented by Marcus Cable Sunday at Bristol Dragway. The race was the eighth of nine national events on the IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series. Romine, driving the CARQUEST Auto Parts-sponsored Top Fuel dragster, finished off a consistent 4- second day with a 4.965, 288.52 mile per hour effort in the final to defeat Bailey, driver of a Doug Herbert-owned Snap-on Tools dragster. Bailey ran 5.010, 289.45. "This place owed us one," said Romine, who experienced a 'blowover' during the June Prolong Super Lubricants Spring Nationals, his last trip to Thunder Valley. "The car ran great all weekend and Clayon (Harris, chief tuner) kept making all the right calls as the day went on. He definitely had the car tuned for the changing track conditions." The win put a 930-point coushin between leader Romine and Snap-on Tools World Championship top contender Herbert. "That's the main goal, we want to win the championship," Romine said. "We want it bad. We're going to bite and scratch and do whatever we can to win this thing. We don't want to let this one slip away." In Pro Stock, top-qualifier Tony Gillig of Lake Zurich, Ill. became a first-time national event winner. Gillig, driving a 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass, covered Thunder Valley's quarter-mile in 6.853, 203.16. Runner-up Pete Berner of Crete, Ill. ran 6.901, 201.04 in his 1997 Chevy Monte Carlo. "This is really unbelievable," said Gillig, the 1996 Midwest Pro Stock Association champion. "That's the Pro Stock dream, to be top qualifier and then win the race. It's just so tough to win an IHRA Pro Stock event, there are no slouches in the field. It's great to win here at Bristol." Floyd Cheek increased his Pro Stock points lead over challengers Tim Nabors, Richie Stevens and Angelo Alesci. Shannon Jenkins moved in front in the Pro Modified points chase by capitalizing on the failed qualifying efforts of former points leader Tommy Mauney and early exit of other championship contender Rickie Smith. Jenkins, of Tuscaloosa, Ala. drove his 1941 Willys into victory circle with a 6.607, 216.13 final round effort over Inman, S.C.'s Quain Stott. Stott, driving a 1963 Corvette ran 6.625, 211.69. Jimmy Rector of Vernon, Ala. captured the Alcohol Funny Car win and moved into the points lead, outrunning Richmond, Va.'s Scott Weis. Rector went 6.157, 228.04, while Weis ran a slower 6.207, 223.36. With the win, Rector takes a 380-point lead over defending world champ Von Smith. Sportsman winners included Jerry Crawford, Ware Shoals, S.C. (API-Vic Richards Top Dragster Quick- 8); Roy Holcomb, Harrison Township, Mich. (Top Dragster); Stacy Hall, Spartanburg, S.C. (Top Sportsman); Joey Bohannon, Louisville, Ky. (Modified); Terry Spurlock, Wilmington, Ohio (Quick Rod); Kenny Raines, Lafayette, Ga. (Super Rod); Gil Carty Jr., Wytheville, Va. (Hot Rod); Dan Fletcher, Rochester, N.Y. (Super Stock); Denny Hillman, Indianapolis, Ind. (Stock). The next IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series event will be Sept. 13 when the tour returns to Norwalk (Ohio) Raceway Park for the rain-delayed Prolong Super Lubricants / Ohio Lottery World Nationals.
