Weney Qualifies Strong At IHRA Amalie Nationals, Drops Tough Quarter-Final Match!
BRADENTON, FL-- The last time that Scott Weney was in Florida, he was the pilot of a suspended-chassis, dragster and was a contestant in a largely- contested, championship bracket race. The second-generation, Pro Alcohol Funny Car racer from Spring City, Pa., won that 1998 event and had every intention of doing the same at the IHRA Amalie Oil Nationals with a race machine of a totally different sort. He nearly succeeded in his quest.
Weney began the weekend by qualifying the Sheetz Racing/Lucas Oil Products Pontiac in the number four position with a 5.989/235.78.
Weney, who also builds race chassis' professionally, opened eliminations in the first round by making Jim Philips his first victim with a 6.048/229.94. He had to look no further than the second round for a formidable opponent. Standing in his way was multi-time national event winner, and defending World Champion Von Smith. Weney reacted first with a stellar .455 reaction time, but unfortunately went into violent tire shake. He was forced to lift, ultimately handing the win to Smith.
"We came into the round confident that we would be able to repeat our 5.98 run the day before," commented Weney. "We were the only car to run a sub five- second run in the first round, therefore we felt we had a firm handle on our combination. Unfortunately the track would not hold the run. We felt we made some firm strides in the car this weekend which will carry over to Rockingham."
Weney next travels to the IHRA Holley Spring Nationals in Rockingham, N.C., on April 9-11. Weney, along with each Pro Alcohol Funny Car contestant, will be afforded four qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest sixteen entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday. This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA's Drag Review magazine.
