BROKEN BLOWER BELT COSTS ROMINE FINAL ROUND BIRTH

BRADENTON,Fla. (March 28, 1999) -- A broken blower belt cost Paul Romine a final round birth Sunday at the Amalie Oil IHRA Nationals at DeSoto Memorial Dragway.

After defeating Jack Ostrander in round one with a round best 4.905, Romine met Doug Herbert's Snap-on Dragster driven by Jim Bailey in round two.

With a final round birth on the line, Romine took the starting line advantage, .486 to .505, then progressed with better 60-foot and 1/8-mile progressive times. With a win light in sight, the supercharger belt broke on the CARQUEST dragster, shutting down Romine's 6,000 horsepower powerplant.

"We had him covered and were on our way to seventy something (elapsed time), then that darn thing broke," Romine said. "It just wasn't our day and its frustrating because I believe we had the better car, but that's racing. We'll be ready for them at Rockingham."

(progressive times: reaction time / 60' / 330' / 1/8-mile / 1000' / 1/4-mile) ROMINE .486 .866 2.189 3.217 215.51 --->5.716/156.90 Bailey .505 .891 2.242 3.238 246.77 ---> 4.869/291.22

The next event for the CARQUEST team will be the Holley Spring Nationals, April 9-11, at Rockingham (N.C) Dragway.
