FARMINGTON, Mo. -- (Sept. 29, 2001) This is one week David Mallow of Bonne Terre will never forget. Not only did he win the Overall Top Eliminator title at Big River Sand Drags he also became a father with the birth of his son, Layton David Mallow on Sept. 26th.
"I almost didn't get to race tonight," Mallow said after his win. "I really had to beg my wife to come. I said, 'Pleeeeeeese can I go.' Eventually she said I could so here I am. What a week."
Mallow's trip to the MSRA (Missouri Sand Racing Association) championship was a wild one. He was the overall top eliminator of the Open 4x4 class. He was that class' representative in the overall top eliminator tournament that featured Todd Dee of Leadwood (Off Road Modified champion), Tim Dee of Bismarck (Race Rail champion), and two-time and defending overall track champion Gladys Edwards (Vehicle ET champion).
Mallow would first square off against Edwards and appeared to have lost the ET race when he blasted out of the sand from the starting line and carried the front end of his 4x4 through the late night air a good distance before all four wheels finally reached the earth again and headed for the finish line. Once there the light came on for Mallow, signifying he had won the race. However he had received an early Christmas present from Edwards who "broke-out" ever so slightly to give the win to the new father.
A similar fate occurred in the other semifinal round match between brothers Tim Dee and Todd Dee as Tim broke-out giving the win to Todd. Todd Dee is no stranger to the championship match of the overall top eliminator tournament. He was the track champion in 1999 and has made the finals the last three years.
Against Mallow in the overall top eliminator race for 2001, Mallow would be in lane one with Dee in lane two. At the finish line when the dust cleared the winning light shined on Mallow in lane one, with both drivers breaking out. Mallow's break-out time was less giving him the win and the track championship.
The win set off a big celebration as the white Jeep 4x4 emerged from the darkness of the shutdown area and returned to his pit area and eventually the tower for pictures.
Also earning Overall Track Champion honors was Jason Stepan of St. Louis. Stepan's title came in the ATV division of the MSRA at Big River came at the expense of Erica Camden of Bonne Terre.
Stepon first had to defeat Jimmy Farris of Potosi in the semifinals and then Jason Waller of Ste. Genevieve in the finals of the Pro ATV class to earn the trip to the championship match. Camden had to defeat J.R. Dreher of Wentzville in the ATV-1 class finals to earn her berth in the title match. In another one of the amazing stories that occurred at the track in recent weeks, Stepan's victory over Camden came just 10 days after his ATV had been stolen. He was able to purchase another ATV to race the previous week, but he had a very short period of time to get his bike ready to race competitively for an event such as the Overall Top Eliminator race. Prior to the Overall Top Eliminator tournaments, the regular racing program was held.
In Junior ATV, Garth Farris of Potosi finished first with Levi Harris of Bonne Terre second. Harris then defeated Farris in the top eliminator race (for the night).
In ATV-1, Josh Hayes of Pilot Knob was the top eliminator and first place winner while Erica Camden finished in second place. In Pro ATV, Rick Finney of St. Louis (who also had his ATV stolen just 10 days prior) finished in first place with Randy Hayes of Potosi second. Hayes was the top eliminator.
In Vehicle ET, Gladys Edwards was first with Josh Harris of Belgrade second. Harris was the top eliminator.
In Open 4x4, Terry Wies of Wentzville captured first place and top eliminator honors while John Dreher of Wentzville finished in second place. In Race Rail, Tim Dee was both the first place and top eliminator winner while Nick Barbee of Poplar Bluff finished in second place.
In Off Road Modified, Todd Dee was the top eliminator and first place winner while Kevin Sellers of Arnold captured second place.
In Stock Trucks, Gladys Edwards was the top eliminator and first place winner while Philip Beaird of St. Louis finished in second place.
The final event of the season at Big River Sand Drags will take place this weekend (Oct. 6-7) with the ATV Nationals.
