FARMINGTON, Mo. -- (Sept. 1-2, 2001) Big River Sand Drags held its annual two-day Labor Day Weekend show and attracted a large number of competitors and spectators from a four-state area. The weekend event also served as a fund-raiser for St. Judes Children's Hospital.
In racing action from Saturday, Allie Glatczak of Potosi was the first place winner in the Junior ATV class with Ken Matt of St. Louis taking second. Matt then defeated Glatczak in the top eliminator race.
In ATV-1, Josh Hayes of Pilot Knob captured first with Dustin Griffin of Camp Point, Ill. taking second. Griffin was the top eliminator.
In Pro ATV (61 competitors), Brandon Meyers of Grand Tower, Ill. was the winner with Jason Stepon of St. Louis taking second. Stepon defeated Meyers in the top eliminator race.
In Vehicle ET, defending overall track champion Gladys Edwards of Bonne Terre was the top eliminator. She had finished second behind Philip Beaird of St. Louis before defeating him in the top eliminator race.
In Open 4x4, Carl Riddle of Potosi drove "Desperado" to first place and top eliminator titles. Josh Stephens of Florissant (driving Quick Trip) finished in second place.
In Race Rail, Kenny Barbee of Poplar Bluff was the top eliminator and first place winner. Scott Nations of Imperial captured second place.
In Off Road Modified, Lee Pickard of Clinton, Ky. returned to take home first place. Tommy Dale of Tennessee finished second, then he knocked off Pickard to take home top eliminator honors.
In the Quick 8 competition for MSRA (Missouri Sand Racing Association) vehicles, Steve Lanvermeier was the winner.
In racing action from Sunday, Glatczak once again finished in first place, however this time she was victorious in the top eliminator race as she defeated second place finisher Garth Farris of Potosi.
In ATV-1, J.R. Dreher of Wentzville was the top eliminator and first place winner. Josh Hayes finished in second place.
In Pro ATV, Sam Coleman of Mineral Point was the winner with Jimmy Farris of Potosi taking second. Farris then defeated Coleman to win the top eliminator title.
In Race Rail, Barbee once again captured first place and top eliminator with Troy Conway of Leadwood finishing second.
In Off Road Modified, Casey Dale of Tennessee was the top eliminator and first place winner while Todd Dee of Leadwood finished in second place.
In Open 4x4, Terry Wies of Wentzville powered his way to first place and top eliminator honors. Steve Barton of Bonne Terre finished a strong second.
In Vehicle ET, Bob DeLargy of Bonne Terre was the first place winner with Edwards taking second. Edwards then knocked off DeLargy to take home her second top eliminator title of the weekend.
In the Quick 8 competition for ATVs, John Conner of Oak Grove, Mo. was the champion.
Over the weekend, a total of $1,500 was raised for St. Judes Children's Hospital. Sponsors who donated items for the weekend included Bluff City Beer, Crown Equipment of Farmington, Johnson/DanMar Racing, Show Place 4 Theaters of Farmington, B&M Signs of Bonne Terre, Bonne Terre Dairy Queen, Skaggs Tire & Service Center of Potosi, McDonalds of the Parkland, Hardees of Bonne Terre, Pepsi Cola Bottling of Farmington, Driver's Seat newspaper and Charlie Hill Auto Sales of Potosi.
Following a week off, racing action will resume at Big River Sand Drags on Saturday, Sept. 15th. Gates will open at 4 p.m. with time trials at 5 and racing at 7:30.
