DINWIDDIE, Va - Angelo Alesci advanced to semifinals in Pro Stock on Sunday at the inaugural IHRA ACDelco Nationals presented by Chevrolet at Virginia Motorsports Park. The Cleveland, Ohio native enjoyed his best outing of the young 2001 IHRA season as he continues to get a handle on the set up of his new 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier.

The former Sunoco Pro Stock Showdown winner qualified for 16-car field with a 6.619 at 209.23 which was good enough to put him on the top half of the ladder in the No. 6 position. While Alesci was unable to match his qualifying numbers during eliminations due to the warmer weather on Sunday, it didn't stop him from being one of the final four competitors in the Sunoco Pro Stock field.

Alesci ousted Terry Leggett in the first round with a solid 6.680/208.49 to Leggett's equally stout 6.687/208.26. That gave Alesci lane choice over No. 14 qualifier Doug Kirk in the second round. Despite Kirk's great .438 reaction time, Alesci was able to drive around him and take the win with a 6.711/207.91 to Kirk's 6.798/208.62.

Unfortunately, Alesci lost lane choice in his classic Chevy versus Ford semifinal race with Gene Wilson. As the pair left the starting line Alesci cut a consistent .464 light but it didn't match Wilson's quicker .443 reaction time. Wilson then pulled away from Alesci to take the victory with a 6.689/207.43 to Alesci's 6.743/207.46.

Alesci is quickly adapting to his new Cavalier and is expected to be a threat to win in the IHRA Pro Stock class the rest of the season. To find out more about Angelo Alesci and all the stars of the IHRA, check out drag racing's largest Internet magazine, www.competitionplus.com.
