IHRA To Kick Off Its 27th Season With The 27th annual, IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals In Darlington, SC. Spectators Treated To Massive Rennovations!
DARLINGTON, SC-- As long as there has been an IHRA, there has been a Winter Nationals. It may not have always been a Darlington, SC venue, but that's where it developed into one of the more successful ventures on the championship drag racing circuit. The 27th annual, IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals returns after a one-year absence to the highly-touted, Darlington International Dragway as the much anticipated season-opener for the 1999 IHRA/Snap-On Tools Championship Drag Racing Series.
Darlington has been making massive spectator improvement in anticipation of much larger crowds than produced in the past. The staff at DID has labored tirelessly repainting all track buildings and restrooms. All entrances were repaved during the offseason and these roads will lead to a new area known as Camp Darlington, a special section for campers attending the race.
Camp Darlington will host twenty new motorhome hook-ups, including power, water and sewers, and round the clock security. The track will also feature reserved, close-in camping for race fans not needing hook-ups. To reserve a location, potential campers are urged to call the track at (843) 332-0123.
"I had to show them the money," explained DID General Manager David Johnson. "The life and death of any track is to re-invest in it and to improve yearly. We are committed to keeping this track one of the nicest in the nation. I want our customers to know that they have had the time of their life when they leave. It's all about giving both families and individuals the most for their money. We are dedicated to giving our customers more than they pay for, in terms of excitement."
As well as a full slate of professional and sportsman drag racing, the 27th anuual, IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals will feature the traditional, Saturday "Night Of Fire" featuring wheel-standers, two jet dragsters and the "Super Shockwave", a jet-powered 1957 Chevy truck. The evening will culminate with a massive fireworks show.
Darlington and the IHRA, keeping with their family friendly pricing for national events, offers a $20 daily ticket that includes free parking and a pit pass. Children (ages 6-12) are admitted for only $5 per day. A 3-Day Super Pass is available.
The IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals features a three-day championship drag racing event scheduled for March 12-14. The first two days are reserved for qualifying and preliminary eliminations. Final eliminations are scheduled for Sunday, March 14. The track is located six miles west of Darlington on Hwy 151.
