Volkswagen drivers Sainz, de Villiers and Depping ready for "Dakar" rehearsal
Volkswagen competes head-to-head against its direct rivals from Mitsubishi and X-raid-BMW this coming weekend with three Race Touareg 2 prototypes before attacking the legendary Dakar Rally in January. The second round of the Dakar Series in Portugal is one of the selected Cross Country Rallies Volkswagen completes as preparation for the desert classic, and represents the third competitive event with the 280 hp diesel prototype in 2008 following the victorious outings at the Central Europe Rally and the Rally dos Sertões. For Carlos Sainz/Michel Perin (E/F), Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz (RSA/D) and Dieter Depping/Timo Gottschalk (D/D) this competition starts already on Monday close to Lisbon with a roll-out before the start proper on 10 September in Lisbon and finish on 14 September in Portimão.
ATS Formula 3 Cup
Podium position for Volkswagen Pilot Vanthoor at the EuroSpeedway
The Belgian Volkswagen driver Laurens Vanthoor finished second at the thirteenth race of the ATS Formula 3 Cup season at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz and in doing so clinched his sixth podium of the season. The Swiss Rahel Frey in a Dallara F306 Volkswagen also finished in the points in eighth place. In the weekend's second race on Sunday, the two drivers from team Van Amersfoort Racing were unlucky: While Rahel Frey retired after two laps, Laurens Vanthoor was thrown to the tail of the field due to a drive-through penalty from where the 17-year old was able to fight his way back up to eleventh position.

After making a bad start to Saturday's race Soerensen was only beaten Kevin Friesacher (A) after a great fight back. Championship leader Armando Parente also had reasons to celebrate after increasing his overall lead after finishing sixth and second. Daniel Abt (D) took third place on Saturday and Marvin Monien (D) the same position on Sunday.
