Franz Echter advances up to fourth
The Dakar circus has arrived in Chile, instantly bringing success to the VEKA MAN with a mission team. On the 207 kilometre long timed trial near Calama, Franz Echter recorded the fourth quickest time with his number 507 MAN. This moved him up one spot in the general truck rankings where he is now in fourth too.
Marcel van Vliet, Serge Bruynkens and Bernard der Kinderen came in eleventh, costing them time and places in the rankings. The 503 MAN now is tenth. The day before Marcel had received a good battering on the trail and he was still feeling the pain in his neck, causing him to adjust his pace to a more "modest speed". "It bugs me because the car is great, but my neck is hurting. From the first minute today I felt it," Marcel commented on his day.
Today Cor Euser steered the 522 truck to a nineteenth position on the timed stage, while Peter Versluis drove on the connection roads leading to and from the timed zone. The crash on the second stage has cost Cor, Peter and navigator Pieter van Kruijsdijk some serious time in the general rankings, they now are in 26th place. But above all the team was happy they had done "some good driving".
The stage going over the Paso de Jama at an altitude of 4800 meters was won by Kamaz driver Vladimir Chagin.
