Today the spectacular stage from Fiambala (Argentina) to Copiapo (Chile) crossing the 4,700 meters high San Francisco Pass had to be cancelled by the organisers of Le Dakar. Due to the severe weather conditions the organisers were forced to take this unfortunate decision. With temperatures as low as 8 degrees below zero and heavy snow fall it would not have been safe for the competitors to conquer this Andes mountain pass at full speed! Also, the frontier between Argentina and Chile was closed and therefore the competitors had to drive in convoy a long way round to finally arrive in the bivouac in Copiapo. The route was almost 200 kms longer than the original route of 641 kms!

Yesterday evening the trucks arrived late in the bivouac in Fiambala and amongst them was also Riwald Dakar Team member Richard Huzink in his GINAF truck. He is driving a constant pace and is happy with his position in the mid field of the strong truck classification. Yesterday he finished 34th for the day which results in 31st place in the overall ranking.

Tomorrow (Saturday) the 7th stage will be waiting for the remaining competitors – a ‘round trip’ with start and finish in Copiapo. The stage is 598 kms long, with a special against the clock of not less than 444 kms.
