Two X-raid BMW X5 at the Dakar 2005
X-raid announces it will be participating in the 27th Dakar with two BMW X5. This will be the third time that X-raid takes part in the hardest rally in the world, which starts in Barcelona, Spain, on 1st January 2005.
"It was not an easy task to put a team together in 3 weeks and without the support from a lot of friends and BMW it wouldn't have been possible", said Sven Quandt, Owner and Team Manager of X-raid. The two BMW X5, latest specification, will be piloted by José Luis Monterde from Spain and Nasser Saleh Al-Attiyah from Qatar. Both are very well experienced drivers and it's not their first Dakar, so they know exactly what they have to expect in these heavy 16 days of rallying.
José Luis Monterde will be co-piloted by Spanish Rafa Tornabell. The team accumulated together more than 10 years of Dakar experience. "It's a great challenge for me to drive my 5th Dakar with such a powerful and well prepared BMW X5. The engine is an absolute beauty", said José Luis Monterde. Nasser Saleh Al-Attiyah, who did his first Dakar in 2004, showed a great potential. He participated this year in the Olympic Games in the Standard Skeet Shooting Discipline and run the PWRC Championship. "I always wanted to join the X-raid team with its powerful BMW X5 and when Sven called me and offered me to drive one BMW X5 I was delighted. With the help of the Qatar Motor & Motorcycle Federation it was possible to join the team and I'm looking forward to get more experience on the next Dakar", said Nasser Saleh Al-Attiyah.
Team Manager Sven Quandt said: "This will be our third Dakar for the BMW X5 and we are absolutely confident that we are well prepared and able to fight for a top position, but with twenty factory or semi-factory cars it will be not easy for us this year. The 2004 season with Khalifa Al Mutaiwei -- UAE -, who won the World Cup this year, showed us that the X5 is absolutely reliable. We are looking forward to this amazing and unique rally event. " This years X-raid Dakar team is again a very international team. Besides the drivers and co-drivers which are from France, Qatar and Spain there are team members from Austria, Belgium, England, Germany, Poland, South Africa and USA. A special thanks to our sponsors and supporters, because without them it would not have been possible to run the upcoming Dakar.
