Dakar Trucks, Stage 11: Nikolaev wins, De Rooy remains in control

Eduard Nikolaev set the pace in the 11th stage of Dakar 2016's truck race, bouncing back from his Wednesday troubles, while Gerard de Rooy continued to cruise out front.

Stage 11: La Rioja - San Juan
#514 Iveco: Federico Villagra, Jorge-Perez Companc, Andres Memi
#501 Iveco: Gerard de Rooy, Moises Torrallardona, Darek Rodewald
#500 Kamaz: Ayrat Mardeev, Aydar Belyaev, Dmitry Svistunov
#508 Kamaz: Dmitry Sotnikov, Igor Devyatkin, Ruslan Akhmadeev
#504 Kamaz: Andrey Karginov, Andrey Mokeev, Igor Leonov

Nikolaev dropped out of contention yesterday after tipping over on a dune and remaining stranded for several hours.

Thursday, however, was much smoother sailing for the Kamaz as Nikolaev took the lead from WP2 onwards.

His stage win was threatened by a late push from squadmate Andrey Karginov. However, despite having been only nine seconds adrift at the penultimate waypoint, Karginov appears to have then hit trouble and is yet to finish the special at the time of writing.

That allowed MAN’s Peter Versluis to secure second in the stage, just ahead of fellow Dutchman Ton van Genugten.

Ayrat Mardeev, who was promoted to second place after Nikolaev’s woes yesterday, ended up fourth in the stage, ahead of Dmitry Sotnikov and rally leader de Rooy.

Although the latter failed to make it to the top five for the first time since Stage 5, his loss of six minutes to Mardeev had little effect on the general classification - as he continues to lead by more than an hour.

Of the other frontrunners, Federico Villagra was ninth-quickest through the stage to hold on to third overall, while Hans Stacey lost almost an hour and dropped behind van Genugten, making it three IVECOs in the top four with two days to go.
