Having first contested Dakar in 2005, 46-year-old Dutchman de Baar has now secured his maiden stage win on the K520 Renault - and appears set for a personal best finish overall, having moved up to sixth.

Leader de Rooy's main rival Eduard Nikolaev started the day as the stage pacesetter - before surrendering the top spot to Federico Villagra and then losing more than three hours towards the end.

Villagra soon hit trouble as well and finished 50 minutes behind de Baar, while de Rooy lost only two and a half minutes to the Renault.

Kamaz's Ayrat Mardeev - now de Rooy's closest rival - was third in the stage, narrowly ahead of Tatra’s Martin Kolomy and MAN’s Hans Stacey.

Kazakh Artur Ardavichus made his first appearance in the top six in the 2016 event as he beat Dmitry Sotnikov and Aleksandr Vasilevski to the spot.

Regular frontrunners Ton van Genugten and Peter Versluis both struggled, the former losing an hour and a half and the latter - a full two hours.
