"The previous years, I always won the Narbonne special. Today, I knew it would be difficult and that I wouldn't be able to beat Fretigne. Muddy tracks are not really for me. On a dry course it might have been different. But the special was nice and I enjoyed myself. The overall is not important yet. You can lose the race here but not win it."
Cyril Despres (FRA - KTM, 2nd) - 002
"Great special! It was however quite tricky with my big bike in the deep mud. I had to take it easy. Once again, I was impressed by the huge crowd. This time, I felt like Gronholm or Makinen."
Fabrizio Meoni (ITA -- KTM, 11th) - 003
"I'm not satisfied with my time. I ride to win. I knew it would be difficult with all this mud. I'm 50% reponsable, the other half is for the bike. But I'm not too furious, a lot of people cheered me. I still had fun."
Alfie Cox (RSA - KTM, 9th) - 010
"The special was great but it's quite difficult to ride on this type of terrain with the big "beast". I took off in the first positions among the fast riders, I therefore believe that those leaving behind will be faster."
David Fretigne (FRA -- Yamaha, 1st) - 012
"I clock the best time without really taking any risks. I didn't feel I was riding fast. It's the first time I use the bike in mud and it really helped me. Having a two-wheel drive bike helps a lot going out of bends. I felt great. Winning the special and leading the overall is of course good. The hardest is yet to come however."
Hiroshi Masuoka (JAP - Mitsubishi, 6th) - 201
"It's the kind of special where you have to enjoy yourself, have fun, be spectacular for the crowd. But still and most of all be careful and not damage the car. Look at it, it's not even dirty. I enjoyed myself. I didn't give 100%. The rally really starts far far away from here."
Stephane Peterhansel (FRA - Mitsubishi, 2nd) - 203
"A very slippery and tricky stage with some very sharp bends. We even had to go in reverse at moments. It's the kind of stage where there is nothing to gain but a lot to lose."
Luc Alphand (FRA - BMW, 4th) - 207
"It was a magnificent special, an amazing landscape with a very slippery track from start to finish. I am very happy to have been able to drive a bit more with Henri Magne (new co-pilot). We still had to stay calm because it's the kind of stage where I tend to give everything. I'm starting to smell the Dakar now. It's god to drive again."
Giniel De Villiers (RSA -- Nissan, 34th) - 208
"On a sharp bend, I didn't want to use the hand break, I hit a rock and the car flipped. The car is damaged but it should be OK. The special was very muddy but better than I expected. Now I just want to get out of the mud and head quickly to Africa. That would be better !"
Jose-Maria Servia (SPA -- Schlesser Ford, 1st) - 209
"We really went well all along the course and overtook 4 or 5 cars that were nice enough to let me go by. It's an advantage compared to those who were stuck behind other competitors. It's a big surprise to have clocked the best time because we don't really have the kind of car made for such a course. But we managed not to make any mistakes. Anyhow it's good mentally speaking. It proves that we're in good position."
