400 km, including 366 against the clock, are on the menu of this tenth
stage. This is a loop special stage where competitors will encounter their
last sand dunes before moving on to savannah terrain. A curvy route but a
fast one as well, which should not help get big gaps... The different leaders
of the different categories should play it safe, unless the Mitsubishi
benefit right away from the misfortunes of Volkswagen to go get their first
stage victory of this year's Dakar.

Welcome to all. The surprising winner of the ninth stage, Latvian Janis
Vinters was the first one to get to grips with the day's special stage at
7h00 GMT as scheduled.

After winning the tenth stage yesterday, Frenchman Jean-Louis Schlesser was
the first car to start the day's special stage at 8h22 GMT as scheduled

Victim of a broken engine at km 422 of the 9th special stage, biker Janos
Desi spent the night in the desert waiting for the broom truck. A freezing
cold night but also -- and more importantly -- a psychologically hard night as
the Hungarian did not dare dose off afraid he would miss the broom truck!

As the three first bikes passed CP1 (km186), Spaniard Marc Coma was
provisionally timed in the lead of the day's special stage, 55" ahead of
Frenchman Cyril Despres and 2'01 in front of Latvian Janis Vinters.

As the first 20 bikes passed at CP1 (km186), Portuguese Helder Rodrigues,
who already won the 2nd special stage, was provisionally in the lead of the
day's special stage, 2'00 ahead of Spaniard Marc Coma and 2'55 ahead of

Cucurachi received a special derogation of the bike jury to go on with the

As the first 20 bikes passed CP2 (km259), Portuguese Helder Rodrigues was

As the first 4 cars passed CP1 (km 186), Japanese driver Hiroshi Masuoka,
winner of the Dakar in 2002 and 2003, was provisionally timed in the lead of
the day's special stage, 16" ahead of his teammate Frenchman Stephane
Peterhansel, and 1'57 ahead of last title holder Luc Alphand.

After a transmission problem at km 63, Polish driver Krzysztof Holowczyc has
managed to repair and has set off again on the day's special stage. He has
now reached the 92 km mark.

Having stopped due to a broken gear box after 125 km of the special stage,
Frenchman Pascal Thomasse has not been able to repair it, even with the aid
of his assistance team, and is now waiting for the broom truck.
12:36 - Vigouroux heading for Dakar

The drive shaft that he broke during the Atar-Tichit stage prevented the
French team of Eric Vigouroux and Alexandre Winocq from taking starter's
orders in yesterday's special stage, meaning that they were disqualified.
The crew are now heading for Dakar.

Pending validation, Portugal's Helder Rodrigues (Yamaha) picked up his 2nd
stage victory on the rally with a scratch time of 4h.12'55, as well as in
the 450 cc category, 44" ahead of Spaniard Marc Coma (KTM) and 51" in front
of Frenchman Cyril Despres. In the general rankings, Coma now boasts a lead
of 54'43 over Despres. In the Marathon category, Latvian Janis Vinters (KTM)
was again successful, with an excellent 4th-placed scratch time. Finally, in
the quad category, Spaniard Carlos Avendano (Suzuki) was victorious.

Pending validation, Qatari Nasser Al-Attiyah (BMW) recorded his first stage
victory on the Dakar with a time of 3h.49'48, 28" ahead of Japan's Hiroshi
Masuoka (Mitsubishi) and 1'49 in front of American Mark Miller (VW). In 4th
place 2'08 behind, Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel (Mitsubishi) still leads
the general rankings, with a lead of 9'56 over his team-mate Luc Alphand
(Mitsubishi). In the two-wheel drive category, victory went to Frenchman
Jean-Louis Schlesser (Buggy Schlesser), with the 7th-placed scratch time. In
the Open category, American Robby Gordon (Hummer) triumphed with the
23rd-placed scratch time. Finally, in the Production category, Japanese
driver Jun Mitsuhashi (Toyota) was victorious.

Pending validation, Dutchman Arjan Brouwer (Ginaf) won his first special
scratch time stage on the Dakar with a time of 4h.36'22, 7'33 ahead of
Brazilian Andre De Azevedo (Tatra) and 9'21 in front of Russian Ilgizar
Mardeev (Kamaz). The Russian thus reduces his deficit on Hans Stacey to
2h.50'04. More than ever, the Dutchman enjoys a solid lead at the top of the
general rankings.
