South Africans in good standing as Dakar leaves Europe.

Soft, deep, powdery sand made the going exceptionally tough in today's third stage of the 2003 Telefonica Dakar race on the beach of Valencia, Spain.

Top South African contender for the day was Vicus van Deventer on the DHL Bombardier, who won the experimental class. He is now second overall, 37seconds behind the quad leader.

Alfie Cox finished in fifth place, but improved his overall position and is now a marginal 10 seconds behind his Gauloises KTM teammate Richard Sainct of France.

Giniel de Villiers in the Nissan Hardbody managed a strong sixth place today. He is currently leading the Nissan team in third place overall, 37 seconds behind Frenchman Stephan Peterhansel.
