Dakar Quads, Stage 11: Alejandro Patronelli takes first stage win, closes in on Marcos

Two-time Dakar champion Alejandro Patronelli celebrated his first stage win since his return from a three-year absence - and is now just eight seconds behind his brother Marcos.

Marcos, who started the day's stage a minute before his brother, lost time after WP4 and was overtaken by Alejandro on the road - albeit he eventually closed in enough to preserve his lead heading into the final two stages.

The duo looked set to finish second and third behind Brian Baragwanath, but the South African gave up the lead at the penultimate waypoint, having headed the entirety of Stage 11 before that.

Baragwanath did end up splitting the Patronellis in the stage classification - and has leapfrogged Sergey Karyakin and Jeremias Gonzalez in the fight for third overall.

Pablo Copetti, who was in contention for a top-five finish in the general classification and had topped Stage 9, was forced into retirement after the second waypoint.

With the stage being called early at CP2 due to the high temperatures, a large number of riders were awarded a nominal time and the results of the run still remain provisional.
