"We have to come back next year as we didn't make it to the stand"
DAKAR 2005 is definitely past tense. Hands have been shaken, here and there a party for the many guests that flew into Dakar. All hardships are forgotten after a hot shower and a beer; the stories become more and more brave.
During the show around Lac Rose and the beach, Jan and Gerard de Rooy went next to each other along the tent where their guests were waiting for them. Hugo Duisters passed a bit later but as well as the de Rooy's he became a very warm welcome. Chaguine gained his 5th victory, just before Hugo Duisters who finished 2nd, just like he did yesterday. Firdau Kabirov took the 3rd place. Jan de Rooy, the Spaniard Tibau and Gerard de Rooy, so 3 DAF pilots, finished almost at the same time being 4th, 5th and 6th. Hans Bekx was allowed to drive the last 31 kilometres but lost his 2nd place in the overall standings.
Jan de Rooy was radiated joy after his 11th rally: "I enjoyed it very much, for me it's never tough enough, but we have to come back next year as we didn't make it to the stand."
What should have been a big party for the Team Hans Bekx became -- only 31 kilometres before the finish -- a disaster. Late Saturday evening, Hans Bekx's truck failed the inspection carried out by a FIA official on 3 items as a departure from the rules. The windpipe to the intercooler was 71 mm instead of the maximum permitted 68 mm, besides the spring leafs and the bumper were rejected for the same reason. All this led to disqualification of the sympathetic amateur from Maria-Heide. After a lot of protests he was allowed to start the last Special along the Lac Rose, after working whole night long on his truck, but at that time he knew almost definitely that he would loose his 2nd place. His 200 friends, family and fans could not wave their flags. No podium for him, at first sight a shabby trick from the organization which wasn't their first one during the rally, but also an action that could have been expected as all winners are always intensively checked before the prize giving. An unpleasant ending for Bekx who drove an exemplary rally the last 16 days.
This all resulted in a 2nd place for Sugawara, after Kabirov who won his first rally. Vismara was the 3rd man on the podium. Jan de Rooy just missed the medal of honour, he took the 4th place at 7.37.43 hours. Young Gerard finished 5th at 9.43.49 hours. A terrific performance after the dramatic start of the 27th edition of the DAKAR rally. Also a reward for the work of the fast assistance, Hugo Duisters, who did not only do his job very well, but also took the 21st place in the overall standings. Five DAF's started the rally, five DAF's finished the rally, with the nasty aftertaste of the disqualification of Hans Bekx, but a splendid performance amidst the 33 trucks that arrived in Dakar.
