First Moment of Glory for Stephane Clair

"Great, you rode really well". Fully equipped with red cheeks because of the tough weather conditions, Stephane Clair is cheered like a real hero taking the start of his very first Dakar. With a huge smile on his face, the rider of bike n°85 takes full advantage of this special moment. "I live in Marseille which is not very far from here so my family came over. I'm really happy to see them. I was a bit stressed because I knew they were coming... I really wanted to achieve something.

Finishing the 25kms of the muddy, slippery course was a bit of a birthday present for this Nice native who celebrated his 34th year on the 1st of January. "I was worried on the start line. The organisers had told us that the course would be tricky. In the first part, I was very careful and I realised that the bike was OK and that it was easier standing up.

Full of mud from top to bottom, the Frenchman had the pleasure of receiving a greeting kiss from his wife at the end of the special that he eventually finished 156th, over 13min adrift. "It's partly thanks to her that I am on this Dakar. She allowed me to compete saying "it's your dream so go for it ! Every new year, this tennis and mountain bike fanatic would dream in front of his TV screen watching the most famous rally-raid in the world. "It's the dream of my whole life".

He knew that his dream would come true last year during the prologue in Marseille. "That's what made me decide to go !" Added to that, the rally will give him the opportunity to go back on the tracks he discovered a long time ago. "When I was 18, I took my bike and went to discover Africa". His only goal : to make it to Dakar. "To start the Dakar is just a stage. The dream would really only come true if I get to Dakar...

Christian and Odile Barbier : The Loving Couple

After 16 Dakar rallies on his own Christian Barbier will start this 26th edition alongside his wife, Odile. "Madame" Barbier explains : "for 16 years now, I have prepared his bag and worried during the whole rally. So of course after all these years it gets to you. I also felt that he wanted to share this adventure with me as a great proof of his love.

Before taking off, Christian and Odile decided to test their relationship on the Tunisia rally in 2002 and 2003. A good test that convinced Odile. "I was worried about the physical part, but I think I'll be OK.

In the T1 category, the loving couple has no precise goal : "a place amongst the leading privateers is possible", whispers Christian. "At least the last spot", adds his wife, laughing. The experience of Christian in his 16 rallies can however give them sufficient confidence. "I've learnt that you should never have too high expectations.. But with my experience, we can have some ambition. If I manage to drive behind the leading group, we never know." His wife however tends to calm him down : "Christian is the kind of person who is over optimistic, even impulsive sometimes. That's why I took a recorder with 6 tapes to record him during the rally. At least I'll have proof once we get back home".

And concerning life as a couple on the rally, Odile remains serene : "We might have a few words but we work together on a daily basis, we eat together, we sleep together. So three weeks in the same car shouldn't be much of a problem.

Anyhow, whatever happens, Odile will have proof... on her recorder !
