"A Dakar With No Brakes"
His friends say that he was born under a good star. However, since the beginning of the Dakar, his second after a 4 year absence, Fabrice Drouet, 44 years of age, is having one problem after the other and nights with no sleep. "We haven't had one special without a problem. When you start with worries, it's almost impossible to catch up. You find yourself in the last wagon". The trouble started after the very first turn of the Clermont-Ferrand prologue: already the brakes. Then during the second special in Morocco between Er Rachidia and Ouarzazate, this businessman, hits the brakes and the disks, the radiator and shock absorbers break. The vehicle no longer has brakes, a problem that will eventually be sorted out only in Bobo Dioulasso five days later.
Meanwhile, in the sand of Mauritania, heading to Tidjikja, Jean Paul Forthomme, his co-driver, 52 years of age and 6 Dakars, makes a navigational mistake : "We found ourselves on the roof on a dune. We stayed there for a hour until a truck helped us put the car back on its four wheels. Add to that the fact that the oil tank spilt over and dirtied all our clothes. There was oil all over the car". Exhausted, the duo made it to the finish at 10h30 in the morning, nine minutes before the start of the next stage.
"We took off immediately and then went back to the bivouac to get fuel and survival rations". At that moment, the two men had not slept in four nights and were still with no brakes. "Jean-Paul was really depressed, he wanted to quit". They eventually make it to Bobo Dioulasso in the morning after driving the 1500kms of the liaison in one go… with no brakes. They just found the time to have a shower and eat a real meal, before working on the car. "The car suffered a lot. Luckily, for the first time I had a mechanic with me. I thought he might not have any work when we started".
The team worked until 2h00 in the morning to take off 4 hours later for the special between Bobo Dioulasso and Bamako with new brakes bought in Nouakchott. After the 12th stage, the 'Dunes 4X4' team finished 51th overall. "Today was our first normal day. We didn't have a problem. When I think of all the things that have happened, with no brakes, I prefer to laugh about it. Of course it's daring. We had some frights…But those who know me, won't be surprised!"
