X-raid Driver Grégoire de Mévius was confronted with technical problems with his BMW X5 on the, up to now, longest and hardest stage of the 2004 Dakar. While the congenial Belgian held his own for the first part of the marathon stage, taking third place in the overall standings with a brilliant run on Thursday, he struggled with engine problems during the second part on Friday. He took 13th place in the day’s standings with a deficit of slightly more than three hours behind the stage winner Masuoka. De Mévius is now in fourth place in the overall standings, 3:52 h behind the leader Stephane Peterhansel and 6:21 min. in front of team colleague Luc Alphand, who is in fifth place.

X-raid sport-director Erwin Weber: “We’ve just experienced how fast it can go up and down in the standings at the Dakar. The mechanics worked through the night to get Grégoire’s car running once again. The work the X-raid crew is doing is par excellence; this is true teamwork and all of them are working to the point of collapse. The important thing is that both cars are still in the running, even if right now our starting position for the second half of the rally doesn’t look so good any more. We’ll keep at it, even though bettering our positions by our own power will be extremely difficult. Right now our goal is to pull through and see what happens up in front. It’s safe to say the cancellation of the two stages in Mali comes at the right time for all competitors. You only have to look once at the faces of the mechanics or drivers to see how exhausting the last few days have been. These two days and the rest day on Monday give us a seriously needed break to catch our breaths too.”
