UPDATE: December 31 -- Motorsport.com has learned that the "driver" listed in the statement from the organizers was a local French citizen who accidently wondered onto the "rally event" road.

The race directors of the Total-Dakar 2002 have released the following statement:

The race direction regrets to confirm that during the stage between Châteauroux and Narbonne, at the exit of Montauban, around 6.p.m., a driver was on the left hand side of the road for an unknown reason and has crashed into an assistance car from the Rallye.

This driver was killed in the accident and the assistance team were injured, not seriously. They have been hospitolised.

The direction of the race extends its deep condolences to the family of the driver involved in this traffic accident.
