Stage 8 - Saturday 5 January 2002 - Zouerat to Atar
22:11 Johnny arrives. Gregoire also!
Cars - Johnny Hallyday has finished his first half-Dakar. The Nissan No. 245 is partnered by the veteran three-times winner of the race and has arrived at the end of the special stage, and will arrive in the Atar bivouac in a few minutes. He finished the special stage in 59th place. In the overall classification, the singer lies 53rd overall.
Also recently arrived in the bivouac at Atar, is the man who has endured the most bad luck today, Gregoire de Mevius. After taking the start this morning with an engine which refused to run on six cylinders, the Nissan Pick-Up No. 203 was stuck in the sand at the first dunes, where he has, it appears, he has lost his clutch. He has already been towed by an assistance truck then continued on his own. In Atar this evening, it remains that he did not pass even one PC, and his continuation in the race remains in the hands of the meeting of the Sporting Committee. The penalty, in effect, could not be that he goes over his time limit and out of the race.
20:16 Trucks: Tchaguine unstoppable
Trucks - Vladimir Tchaguine (Kamaz No. 409) continues to stamp his authority on the Trucks category. Today he has taken another stage win by the margin of 21m 49s from the Japanese driver Yoshimaza Sugawara (Hino No. 400). In the overall classification, Tchaguine arrives this evening 1h 45m 47s ahead of the Czech driver Karel Loprais (Tatra No. 400).
16:00 Masuoka digs out the win
Cars - After the first three competitors had crossed the finish line of the special stage, it appears that Hiroshi Masuoka (Mitsubishi) has extended his advantage in the overall standings and now possesses an enormous advantage of 11m 46s over team mate Shinozuka and 26m 09s over Jutta Kleinschmidt. The Mitsubishis were concerned about the threat of De Mevius with the Nissan Pick-Up, but after having taking the start on five cylinders, he has returned on a tow rope in the direction of Zouerat.
14:01 Bikes: De Gavardo second
Bikes - The first nine competitors have finally crossed the finish line of the special stage. Victory goes to Kari Tiainen, ahead of Jordi Arcarons, Isidre Esteve Pujol, Giovanni Sala, Richard Sainct, Carlo de Gavardo, Joan Roma, Fabrizio Meoni and Alfie Cox. De Gavardo reclaims 1m 35s from Meoni and 30s from Roma and consolidates his second position in the overall classification. Despite an accident near the start of the stage, Cox only lost 5m 03s to Meoni.
Overall classification (provisional): 1. Meoni; 2. De Gavardo (1m 53s behind), 3. Roma (2m 02s behind); 4. Arcarons (8m 30s behind); 5. Cox (11m 03s behind); 6. Esteve Pujol (17m 22s behind); 7. Sainct (22m 49s behind); 8. Sala (33m 51s behind).
