Sunday, January 13, 2002 Stage 16 - Dakar Loop - final day of event
"Winning here has taken a number of years and now I have won the race twice. I dedicate this to my family and to those people at KTM who had belief in me and gave me the opportunity to ride such a fantastic bike. I will be back next year."
"The last few days have been very hard on the nerves, as I closed in on a podium place. I feared that something might go wrong and all my efforts would be in vain. I am very pleased, it was a great Dakar for me. Things got better each day. I hope to return next year."
Carlo de Gavardo
"It is a happy day.I have many things in my mind, but the most important is to finish the race. I am pleased to be here. I would like to thank Roberto, my mechanic, who has worked so hard. All the mistakes that I made, I will think about for next time. Fourth place is not bad."
"I finished the race for the fifth consecutive year. But this time, I fell too often. I am a little sad, because we really wanted to win the race. Two days from the finish, it was not possible."
Pascal Maimon - co-driver to Masuoka
"With Hiroshi, we threw our arms around each other like two children. It was a release of the frustration from last year, which was difficult to accept. We started this year in a different frame of mind. We attacked, but took care of the car. Hiroshi drove superbly. We only had one puncture. On a Dakar, that is fantastic. It is the most beautiful day in my life after the birth of my child three months ago."
"With all our problems we were not able to win. We can all be proud of our performances."
"At the beginning I had a problem with the language. I needed French to talk to the mechanics. For two and a half years I worked at a garage with the mechanics. I was very hungry and worked very hard. So now I am so happy to win Dakar. I am top of the world. Mr Brehmer looks down over me. He helped my programme at the start and I'm sure he is watching now."
"We had problems with the tramsmission during the race and I am happy with second place under the circumstances. For sure, we will come back next year and try and take a second win on the Dakar. I am pleased for Hiroshi and for the team."
