Two-time Dakar Rally champion Nasser Al-Attiyah says he is out of contract for next year's edition of the race and is open to offers.

Having won the Dakar in 2011 and 2015, Al-Attiyah finished runner-up to Stephane Peterhansel in 2016 - pending the outcome of an appeal filed against the Frenchman.

The Qatari raced for his current team X-raid between 2005 and 2009 before rejoining the squad in 2014 after stints in Volkswagen, Hummer and Demon Jefferies machinery.

But, with Al-Attiyah scaling back his participation in motorsport due to a focus preparation for the 2016 Olympic Games, he currently does not have a deal in place for next year's Dakar.

"I am a free man," Al-Attiyah said upon arriving at the finish line of the 2016 Dakar Rally.

"If someone offers me a good contract, I can go - because I have no contract."

However, the Qatari clarified that he is not disappointed with the outcome of the rally.

"The feeling we had before starting the Dakar is that we could be on the podium, but we did not know where. I am happy with second place, especially for the team."
