INDIANAPOLIS, Monday, Nov. 12, 2001 - The Indianapolis Motor Speedway's USGP charity auctions ended over the weekend, with bids totaling $187,356 for the 22 auctions featuring Formula One driver safety equipment. Most of the 10-day auctions - which will benefit children of victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on America - featured items worn by Formula One World Championship drivers during the SAP United States Grand Prix on Sept. 30. Several other items also were worn during the season-ending Japanese Grand Prix on Oct. 14. The Ferrari-red helmet worn during the USGP by 2001 World Champion Michael Schumacher was by far the most popular item, having drawn 60 bids and a top bid of $55,200. Ralf Schumacher's race-worn helmet drew the second-highest bid, $25,100, and 2001 USGP race winner Mika Hakkinen's race-worn driver's suit drew the third-highest bid, $20,300. "Our gratitude goes to the Formula One drivers who made this auction possible in the first place and to the dedicated Formula One fans who made it a resounding success," said Tony George, president and CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "The immense generosity of all involved will certainly be felt by families who are trying to rebuild their lives." All proceeds from the Speedway's USGP charity auctions are being donated to the New York State World Trade Center Relief Fund via eBay's "Auction for America," a program dedicated to raising $100 million in 100 days for victims and families of the terrorist attacks on America. The Formula One World Championship will return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sept. 27-29, 2002, for the third running of the SAP United States Grand Prix.
