FORT WORTH-DALLAS (Nov. 27, 2001) - As Americans continue to donate in record numbers to national charities since the tragedies of Sept. 11, the Texas chapter of Speedway Children's Charities (SCC) prepares to hand out a record $403,572 to 92 Tarrant, Dallas, Denton and Collin County organizations benefiting children.

The SCC will present the checks at the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, Tuesday evening, December 4 at The Speedway Club. Ben E. Keith Corporation is the sponsor for this year's event.

"There has been a nationwide concern that the events of Sept. 11 might take attention away from local charities who are also in need," said speedway general manager Eddie Gossage. "I believe this incredible amount of money raised through Texas Motor Speedway and Speedway Children's Charities shows that the citizens of North Texas are still committed to helping those here at home."

SCC annually holds special fund-raising activities at Texas Motor Speedway to benefit Tarrant, Dallas, Denton and Collin County organizations that apply for the grants. Since the construction of the speedway five years ago, SCC has raised nearly $1.5 million for charitable children's organizations. Of this year's record amount, more than $100,000 has been raised since Sept. 11.

"This has been an incredible year - our best ever," said Alicia Jenkins, director of the Texas Chapter of SCC. "People have just been amazing in how they've given of both their time and money.

"We hold several events each year, including a gala which is our biggest fundraiser. This year's gala was scheduled for Sept. 12 in conjunction with our Indy Racing weekend. After the tragedies of Sept. 11 we debated whether or not we could even hold the event. We decided to move ahead as planned and ironically, it was our most successful gala to date."

The Dec. 4 event will be held in front of The Speedway Club beginning with entertainment at 5:45 p.m. The ceremonies begin at 6:15 p.m. and include a visit from Santa, who will appropriately arrive in the back of a NASCAR truck driven by NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver David Starr, as well as the lighting of the 40-foot Christmas tree. The event will be hosted by SCC board member and KXAS-TV sports director Scott Murray. Following the tree lighting ceremony, the special SCC grants and awards will be presented.
