Delaware race fans can help in fight against breast cancer; "Race Fans for a Cure®" visits Dover september 21-22.
(Dearborn, Mich., Sept. 13, 2002) -- Race Fans for a Cure® will continue its contributions to the fight against breast cancer when it visits Dover (Del.) International Speedway next weekend. In just two and a half years, Race Fans for a Cure® has distributed tens of thousands of shower cards to race fans and raised more than $200,000, often a dollar at a time, for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. By visiting the Race Fans for a Cure® display booth at the race track, fans can play an important role in the continued fight against breast cancer.
Race Fans for a Cure®, which is designed to increase awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection, will be at Dover International Raceway from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, prior to the NASCAR Grand National Series MBNA All-American Heroes 200, and Sunday, September 22, prior to the NASCAR Winston Cup Series MBNA All-American Heroes 400. The display booth will offer information about the Komen Foundation and its mission to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment, and is equipped to accept donations from fans.
Ford Credit, associate sponsor of the No. 88 NASCAR Winston Cup Taurus driven by 1999 champion Dale Jarrett, sponsors a Race Fans for a Cure® display booth at various NASCAR events and Ford Racing Fan Appreciation Days during the season.
Race Fans for a Cure® has raised $68,942.67, so far, in 2002, including $19,087.45 in the Charlotte, N.C. area, and $16,287.80 at Daytona International Speedway -- the two largest amounts ever raised by the program at a single event. The program received $51,458.93 in donations in 2001, and with a matching donation from Ford Credit, the total presented to the Komen Foundation last year was $102,917.86. For a $1 donation, fans receive a keepsake enamel pink ribbon, and can personalize a paper pink ribbon to show their support. Additionally, Race Fans for a Cure® offers an exclusive, collectible tin to generate funds for the fight against breast cancer. This tin, containing two No. 88 die-cast cars -- one is the brand-new "fantasy" Race Fans for a Cure® paint scheme and the other is the 2002 UPS Taurus -- is available to those making a donation of $20 or more. All proceeds go to the Komen Foundation to support the fight against breast cancer through funding of innovative research and community-based outreach programs.
Additionally, since 1998, Ford Credit has donated money to the Komen Foundation for every top-three finish and pole position (as fastest qualifier) that Dale Jarrett collects during the season. Since its inception, Ford Credit has donated $622,500 to the Komen Foundation based on Jarrett's on-track performance and end-of-season bonuses. Ford Credit gives the Komen Foundation $10,000 for each of Jarrett's victories, $7,500 for each second-place finish, $5,000 for each third-place finish and $5,000 for each pole won. This season, Jarrett has two victories (Pocono and Michigan), a second-place finish (Michigan), a third-place finish (Loudon) and a pole won (Michigan), resulting in a $37,500 donation from Ford Credit.
