Homeless Animals Will Win If Prendeville Can Complete All 100 Laps Tomorrow at Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE, May 31 - For animal lovers, tomorrow's Firestone Indy Lights race at the Milwaukee Mile and a similar event June 21 at Iowa Speedway are the biggest races of the year.
That's because they have the potential to bring in the most donations possible to one of the largest animal welfare concerns in the world, the not-for-profit Best Friends Animal Society, through Andrew Prendeville's Racing Laps for Best Friends program.
Sunday's Firestone Indy Lights Milwaukee 100 and the June 21 race in Iowa have the largest lap count of any races on the 2008 Firestone Indy Lights schedule. Tomorrow's race at Milwaukee is slated for 100 laps, while the distance at Iowa will be 115 laps.
Through a Web site at racinglapsforbestfriends.com, fans can make donations to Best Friends in any monetary amount from 25 cents and up based on the number of laps Prendeville completes in any or all of the Firestone Indy Lights races this year. The tax-deductible donations go entirely to Best Friends.
If Prendeville's Best Friends Animal Society No. 5 should complete all 100 laps tomorrow at Milwaukee and a fan pledged $1 a lap for that race, the fan's credit card would be charged with a $100 donation to Best Friends after the checkered falls. If Prendeville only completes half of the race, the donation would be $50.
Fans can follow Prendeville's progress on-line at indycar.com/indylights or at the track in person when the race starts at 11:30 Central time Sunday. They can also watch the tape-delayed race broadcast on ESPN2 on June 5 at 1 p.m. Eastern time.
Tickets for a raffle featuring prizes of sessions at the Bertil Roos Racing School may also be obtained through the racinglapsforbestfriends.com Web site. In addition to tomorrow's race at Milwaukee, donations for the Iowa race and the nine subsequent races remaining in the 16-race season can be made at any time on that Web site too.
Prior to this weekend's race at the Milwaukee Mile, Prendeville visited the Elmbrook Humane Society in Brookfield, Wis., on Tuesday.
Best Friends is affiliated with humane societies and rescue groups around the world. It often provides homes for animals that other groups cannot place at its sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, where it cares for some 1,500 animals on any given day.
Those animals include 22 of the dogs formerly owned by NFL player Michael Vick, and a dog named Ballsy that was rescued following Hurricane Katrina. Prendeville sponsors the latter animal via Best Friends' Web site at bestfriends.org. Details of Ballsy's rehabilitation can be obtained through a blog Prendeville writes on racinglapsforbestfriends.com.
