The NASCAR Foundation And The V Foundation Announce $500,000 Gift To Shands Children's Hospital
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (July 1, 2010) -- The NASCAR Foundation and The V Foundation for Cancer Research announced today a gift of $500,000 to Shands Children's Hospital at the University of Florida to support a new pediatric oncology unit.
The NASCAR Foundation and The V Foundation each have committed $250,000 toward the 18-bed in-patient unit that will see approximately 14 pediatric patients a day, plus an estimated 130 oncology patients, 30 bone-marrow-transplant patients, 15 solid-organ-transplant patients, 30 rheumatology/ immunology patients and 50 sickle cell patients per year. The unit will allow young patients to have easier access to their primary care physicians during treatments.
The gift is the single largest that The NASCAR Foundation has made to a pediatric oncology unit.
"We are very proud to support the new pediatric oncology unit at Shands Children's Hospital," said NASCAR Foundation Board Member and NASCAR Chief Financial Officer Todd Wilson. "This unit will make it easier for young patients from Florida and across the United States to receive the critical medical care they need."
At Shands Children's Hospital, University of Florida physicians provide the full spectrum of pediatric specialty services and offer some of the most specialized pediatric programs for the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of complex conditions. The University of Florida Division of Hematology/ Oncology at Shands Children's Hospital sees nearly 100 new cancer patients per year, and a large portion participate in clinical trials. The new unit is designed to provide a safe environment and specialized nursing to provide promising new medications and cellular therapies to children who have relapsed through clinical trials.
The V Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to saving lives by helping to find a cure for cancer, has a well-established record of supporting cancer research.
