Winston Cup Driver Kyle Petty and Sprint Team Up To Build a Brighter Future For the Children of North Las Vegas
North Las Vegas, Nev. - March 2, 2002- NASCAR weekend in Las Vegas may only occur once a year, but area children now will have a permanent reminder of the excitement it brings. Sprint, the primary sponsor of the #45 Dodge driven by Kyle Petty in the Winston Cup Series, hosted a daylong playground build to bring racing directly to the children of North Las Vegas.
Sprint employees spent the day at the City View Park donating their time and manpower to build the new racing-themed KaBOOM! Playground, which features miniature racecars, checkered flags and more. Petty was on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony and helped Sprint employees put the finishing touches on the new facility.
"This has to be one of the best-looking playgrounds I've seen," said Petty. "I thought the Sprint Dodge was fast but that is nothing compared to the speed of the Sprint employees and what they were able to accomplish in just one day. What makes this playground even more special is all the muscle and heart that was put into to building it. It's truly a unique event to watch Sprint and the city of North Las Vegas come together to build something that will benefit the children of this community for a long time standing."
KaBOOM! is a national nonprofit organization that brings together people, community organizations and businesses to develop much-needed safe and accessible playgrounds across the country. Sprint employees participated in a one-day construction blitz, rehabilitating an older existing playground into a haven for children to play games with friends, keep fit and healthy, and develop positive social skills. The North Las Vegas City View Park, which serves 2,000 children, is not only one of the oldest parks in North Las Vegas, but its also one of the most heavily used.
"We look forward to strengthening the communities in which we do business by building a much-needed playground that is critical to the development of children," said Lou Emmert, Sprint vice president and general manager. "Thanks to a generous grant from the Sprint Foundation, our employees will have the unique opportunity to build something lasting and tangible in the community, providing a safe outlet to foster children's healthy physical, social and creative development."
Sprint has participated in four prior KaBOOM! Playground builds in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. Sprint has similar builds planned for Washington D.C. and Orlando later this year.
