(DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 1, 2003) - Dale Jarrett, on behalf of the Race Fans for a Cure® program sponsored by Ford Credit, will present a check for $105,409.69 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation at Kansas Speedway on Friday, October 3. The check will be presented to Cindy Schneible of the Komen Foundation in the track's infield media center at 10:45 a.m., prior to practice for this weekend's NASCAR Winston Cup Series Banquet 400.
Race Fans for a Cure®, which is designed to increase the awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection, received the donations - often a dollar at a time - from race fans at various NASCAR Winston Cup, Busch Grand National and Craftsman Truck series events and Ford Racing Fan Appreciation Days, and through its website - www.racefansforacure.com - so far during 2003. Race Fans for a Cure® has raised nearly $365,000 for the Komen Foundation since 2000.
The Race Fans for a Cure® display trailer and No. 88 ribbon show car will be at Kansas Speedway Friday-Sunday, October 3-5. Race Fans for a Cure® will be in the Display Midway, behind the turn four grandstands, and will be open from 7:30 a.m.-7 p.m. on Friday, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, and 7:30 a.m.-12 p.m. on Sunday. The display will offer breast health information about the Komen Foundation and is equipped to accept donations from fans. All proceeds go to the Komen Foundation to support its mission of eradicating breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.
Furthermore, since 1998, Ford Credit has donated money to the Komen Foundation for every top-three finish and pole position (as fastest qualifier) that Dale Jarrett, driver of the No. 88 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Taurus, collects during the season. Since its inception, Ford Credit has donated $642,500 to the Komen Foundation based on Jarrett's on-track performance and end-of-season bonuses. Ford Credit gives the Komen Foundation $10,000 for each of Jarrett's victories, $7,500 for each second-place finish, $5,000 for each third-place finish and $5,000 for each pole won. This season, Jarrett won at Rockingham, resulting in a $10,000 donation from Ford Credit.
The two programs have combined to generate $1,006,667.69 in donations to the Komen Foundation.
"The Komen Foundation is grateful to the tens of thousands of NASCAR fans that have contributed to breast cancer research and community outreach projects through the Race Fans for a Cure® program," said Susan Braun, president and chief executive officer for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. "This million-dollar milestone represents years of genuine support and commitment from Ford Credit and Dale Jarrett, who are true partners in our promise to put an end to breast cancer. But perhaps more importantly, it means we've delivered the life-saving message of early detection to countless NASCAR fans across America."
