INDIANAPOLIS, IN (May 17, 2003) -- Celebrities and athletes, including Tim Allen, Dario Franchitti, Tony Kanaan, Al Unser Jr, Dan Wheldon and owners Chip Ganassi, Kevin Savoree, Kim Green and former owner Barry Green, along with President and CEO of the IRL/IMS Tony George as well as the host of the evening, Mario Andretti joined Michael Andretti at The Brickyard Crossing Golf Resort & Inn on Saturday, May 10, 2003 for a special "Countdown to Indy" retirement program recognition that benefits the newly formed The Michael Andretti Foundation.
The event featured both a live and online auction whereby bidders online could bid against attendees at the party on a group of exclusive items, including a custom designed helmet that featured a combined Tony Kanaan/Michael Andretti paint scheme, a rookie/veteran design combo helmet of both Dan Wheldon's helmet design along with Andretti's, as well an aerobatic ride in the Klein Tools aerobatic plane and other great items.
Guests were entertained by speakers who recognized Michael's career achievements in racing and issued a bit of advice for the upcoming race month. The highlight of the evening was a short stand up routine by Michael Andretti's friend, actor and comedian Tim Allen who entertained the guests in attendance.
Established in 2003 by Michael Andretti, The Michael Andretti Foundation will support a variety of charitable causes and initiatives that promote children's charities, educational purposes and wellness programs. No charity has been chosen for the proceeds from this event at this time.
"We want to take a good look at some various charity options and determine what is the best place for the funds that we raised to go towards," said Michael Andretti.
Archipelago, Motorola, Honda, Firestone, New World Aviation, UBS PaineWebber, Budweiser, Jim Beam, 7-Eleven, Klein Tools and Pepsico sponsored the evening's activities.
